It was a baptism of fire! My first RMS post, firstly I took the pictures of my living and dining long room before RMS even started! My friend at work was in the habit of taking pictures of her home at Christmas time to send for her mom in the U.S and they looked so pretty I thought why not take some pics of my home too?
Now for some people home decor comes naturally, but for me it was something I had to learn, (and still learning) growing up with seven sisters we each had our different functions in the home when it came to helping our mom, I gravitated to the kitchen, so I spent little or no time in the living or dining rooms putting up curtains or arranging furniture. In fact my first experience with curtains and decorating came after I was married, and boy was it tough!!
I remember my first Christmas in my apartment, after I was married, I spent all day trying to get those dang curtains up! Now although I had no experience in 'house-keeping' per se I do appreciate a lovely home that is nicely decorated and I was determined to have my tiny apartment look spiffy for Christmas!
So anyway when RMS started I was hooked! I viewed and viewed and then one day I was going through some photos on my laptop and came across my photos of my dining room and a little sitting room I created off my living room (By then we were no longer in my apartment but in our own home) and I thought hey! I'll post these and see what happens! The photos were taken an hour after midnight on New Years Eve, I had my relatives over and we spent the night on the porch and in the patio. So the dining room and sitting room was not really 'messed up'.
Two of my sisters and a brother in law at the New Years Eve get together
So I posted my 'sitting room' and I waited, and boy did I get it!! The comments were fierce!
'Your wall colors are OK but lose the chairs'
'Oh my I'm speechless'
'Those shelves are WAY too high'
'Pics are a bit dark repost'
'Those curtains do nothing for the room'
Not all were bad though:
'I do like your colors'
And my rating? 2.5 POOR! I have to admit I was a bit sad, I wished they were a bit nicer to me, why did they have to be so mean? I mean I understood the criticism but this is my home, I was just sharing, I felt like the contestants on Design Star after their show was 'cancelled'.
But after a few days I said what the heck, for the few that were nice I would post again, and I would even learn from the meanies and make the changes that I saw fit.
So undaunted and I even had a good laugh I posted my dining room:
The comments were not as fierce but still fun to read:
'What the heck is that on the table?'
'hmmmm those curtains!'
'lose the rug!'
And the nicer comments:
'Your furniture is lovely'
These posts were taken off a long time ago, to be honest not much has changed, (I did lower the shelves though) lol!

I wish the date on the blog would be the date published and not the date started...............
Well, I love your colors and your place and would LOVE to come visit and have some of your tasty homegrown veggies. How's the garden doing? Do the size of the plant growth amaze you everyday? Have a fun weekend! Penny PS You're braver than me, I've never posted any of my rooms. I did post a pic of one of my furkids on a new floor just so I wouldn't be unclickable. I'm perfectly hard enough on myself thank you. hahaha
I think your dining room table should be facing the other way. ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!! heeheeheeeeeeeeeeee! Isn't it funny the way you look at your room one way, and then you post it and others see it totally differently?

Hey Raquel, I think if you go back to edit, you can change the time and date on your blog post. I know I had to do that with one of mine! Then just repost it.

RMS can be a real slap in the face. I remember my first post. I thought my room looked just lovely but the hash comments really took me down a peg or two. I just recently posted my bedroom and I worked so hard to try to make it RMS worthy before I put the pics up. i was hoping to have one room that the decorating gurus approved of. The outside of my house has gotten great ratings but I didn't have much to do with that except for planting some flowers.
Raquel, I just did it to my post... changed the date and time. You go to Dashboard, then edit post, then at the bottom of the post, you'll see a clickable link for "post options". Click on that, then change the date and time, and click "Post Blog". Hope this helps!

Girl! You really are the kitchen girl in truth! But I'm proud of how you made the effort to decorate over the years. Your house is lovely I always find it beautiful when I visit! The main thing I find you can improve is the tidniness on a daily. I have that problem too and I don't have two kids and a husband. So I have no suggestions, maybe some of your RMS mates can assist us both. Nice pics, fmdining room shot especially!
I was hysterical reading the comments you got. Sorry! It is funny that we decorate our homes to our taste and people hate them. What can you do? You have to live with it.
LOL at braincoral for commenting that you have to keep your home more tidy on a daily basis! We would never have known if she didn't tell us. LOL!
I hear you! my first post was a disaster! It was my living room. I had three photos of each of my three kids on the wall in the living room. I got comments all the way from "lovely grandchildren" to that is fine "for an old lady"
I cried. I was only 36! who do these "critics" think they are? I am a lisenced interior decorator...have done dozens of homes for other people..all with glowing reviews...but RMS...that is a tough crowd. Especially when the meanies are PMS-ing!
it was the nice people (who I am still friends with) that keep me coming back
OMG! LOL! Sisters!! Braincoral(if that's even your name)I'm so gonna get you for this!!
Oh man, I remeber the first posting of my kitchen...one person said my cabinets looked dirty! I had glazed them and I love them! Then another said the 80's called and want their kitchen back! lol oh and my red sitting room? They said it looked like someone threw up punch on my walls! Yep, That's right, they said that!!! lol But I love it! So what I say....
Hey there, My RMS screen name is BLGeee, sorry, I should have told you that before!
Okay, I went to page 11 to try to figure out who you are! Are you melmum?
you do have great taste in furniture, those dining room furniture must have cost a fortune.Problen is there is no decorating in the decor.
I know anonymous! I need to spend time personalising my rooms! I think they need some decor too! I'll get around to it soon.
Believe me I'm had my share of meanies at RMS. lol I can't tell you how many times I've pulled my spaces from RMS. But, I have some wonderful friends there. I'm sorry to had to go through all of that. Personally I have decided it's not a good thing for my soul to dwell upon what other think about my home. I live here. It's created especially for my husband and I. We love it! That's all that matters!! Have a great day! Terrie
They even say mean things about my art.One said I needed to burn my house down. the mural was nasty. It was baseball caps !Most of the murals I post are in other peoples homes. The idiot didn't even know me. I posted a hutch and the first person said I needed to take the china out it wasen't nice enough. I took the post down instead. Kathy
RMS is a crazy place. I still like going there sometimes to see the beautiful rooms people post, but will probably never show the interior of my home because of everyone being so judgemental and mean. I did get some fairly decent ratings on my garden posts though, and postings of my deck. Maybe someday I'll try it again, then again, maybe not.
Your rooms look great, by the way.
Kady
Found your blog via Justine's hope you don't mind my dropping in! Just came back from Jamaica and sometimes wish I could stay there! My neighbors are from Trinidad and keep telling me we need to visit there too! Welcome to RMS and blogging! So sorry you got slapped around....seems like all the newbies do, they slapped me so hard the first time I cried for days but after I got over myself (lol) I decided to use some advice and to my surprise much of it was correct and truly helped! Lisa (aka French);)
Hi!
Thanks for your comments. So nice that you understand. I got a few comments that I wasn't expecting about meeting him for lunch. Everyone's against it. I've been seeing him for twenty years! My husband knows all about it and he even offered to watch the girls for me but I'm taking them with me. I edited my post to include that. I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea about our "lunch". It's a real lunch! LOL.
